In 1881, two "properly faced" grass tennis courts were constructed on the site where the present clay courts are located. The Powelton Lawn Tennis Club of Newburgh, New York was formally organized in 1882. It was one of the original 33 tennis clubs chartered by the United States Lawn Tennis Association when it was formed that same year. As interest in tennis at The Powelton Club grew during the late 1920's, the aging grass courts were resurfaced with clay and two more clay courts were added. In 1950, a fifth singles court was added.

Today, four doubles courts and one singles court occupy the historic clay surface. They can be found north of the entrance between the clubhouse and Balmville Road. The courts recently were resurfaced and are well tended.

Each year the USTA sponsored Red Clay Classic is played at The Powelton Club. The courts are available for member sponsored group outings. Our members are extremely fortunate to have as our Director, Martin Dvoracek, and Assistant, Veronika Dvorackova. Martin was born in Brno, Czech Republic. He is a former ATP player and All-American at Oklahoma State University. Martin previously coached at Tennisport in NYC and in East Hampton. He is returning for his 16th season at The Powelton Club. Veronika also hails from Brno. She is a former WTA player and a USC graduate, where she played on its tennis team. Prior in coming to The Powelton Club, Veronika coached at Sleepy Hollow Country Club and Columbus Racquet Club in New York. Veronika is coming back for her 13th season.

Martin and Veronika provide instruction and activities for all levels of play. They offer group and private lessons, hitting lessons, women’s/men’s clinics, cardio tennis, round robins, member – guest tournaments, morning leagues, inter – club matches, tournament training, mixed doubles, parent – child tournament, tennis and golf biathlon, children’s sibling tournament and many more. New formats and events are always welcome.

We offer our members several opportunities for both social and competitive tennis. New members quickly are welcomed by the pros and are integrated into the tennis community by a “tennis ambassador”. A tennis ambassador will hit with the new member and introduce him/her to other players.

In order to keep in line with the club’s long tennis history, attire on the courts remains white’s only. The pro shop offers an abundant selection of tennis clothing and equipment for men, women and children.

Please feel free to contact Martin or Veronika with any questions at 845.561.5449.
